Want to learn a little oceanography, meteorology, and geology in a relaxing, fun-filled setting?

Join us for an informal and unofficial, no-credit, no-extra-credit, strictly-for-fun, trip to Monterey Bay from Friday, November 11, to Sunday, November 12.

While you may choose your own mode of transportation and accomodations, I typically drive up (~6 hours) on Friday and check in to the Borg Motel, located right on Monterey Bay in Pacific Grove. Though simple modest--and not the most comfortable motel in the world--the price is very reasonable, with rooms starting at $79. If you want an ocean front, it's a bit more ($119 and up), which still is amazing for being able to watch and listen to crashing waves while lying in bed. Parking is free, as is coffee and tea every morning.

The best thing about the Borg is that it's about a mile or so from the Monterey Bay Aquarium (15-20 minute walking distance if you want to avoid pricey parking). We will visit the aquarium from 10am to early afternoon. The rest of your afternoon may be spent sightseeing (Fisherman's Wharf is quite nice). If the weather is right, we always meet at the beach in front of the lighthouse at the golf course in Pacific Grove about 500 pm where we explore the tidepools and watch the frequently gorgeous Pacific Grove sunset. Afterwards, we head over to Gianni's Pizza (725 Lighthouse Avenue) for family-style pizza dinner.

On Sunday morning, we meet at 830am and head to Point Lobos State Park, which features Monterey Pines, sea otters, sea lions, tidepools, incredible geology, light hiking, stunning scenery, and occasionally gray whales and white sharks. Those who wish may proceed downcoast along Big Sur, surely one of the most spectacular coastlines in the world.

Students who have attended in the past tell me this trip is one of the best experiences they have ever had and something not to be missed. Because it is an unofficial event, friends, lovers, and families are welcome!

Please feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions.

Here's more info on the Borg...

Borg’s Ocean Front Motel sits just steps across from the water’s edge overlooking stunning and serene Monterey Bay. From the comfort of your room watch the sea otters play and the seals and sea lions sun bathe, catch a glimpse of a whale, watch the shorebirds soar and the fishing and sail boats glide in the bay! Discover this truly romantic and restful spot. During the day choose from a multitude of Monterey Peninsula activities and at night fall asleep to the rhythmic sound of ocean waves.

Simply cross the street to walk, bike or rollerblade on the Pacific Grove Recreation Trail which runs for miles in either direction, hugging the rugged coastline. At Lover’s Point Park enjoy the bathing beach coves, explore the tide pools, play sand volleyball, plan a family picnic or BBQ. Kayak or scuba dive in Monterey Bay. Visit the renowned and nearby Monterey Bay Aquarium and Fisherman’s Wharf.
