Huntington Beach Journal
A photo essay of the beach  before and after the closure of summer 1999

In one short month, Huntington Beach was transformed from a beachside paradise to a beachside ghost town. An apparent sewage leak elevated water-borne human bacterial concentrations to unsafe levels, necessitating closure of a 4.5-mile-long stretch of the beach. How this happened and why are two questions that may never be satisfactorily answered.
